Background and Context
The fallout from the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine has left devastating environmental and social impacts throughout Eastern Europe. The war has now produced hundreds of millions tons of waste and exposed residents to harmful substances like asbestos. Livelihoods have been upended, communities destroyed, and shifting fiscal and political priorities have drastically reshaped how Ukraine's government works.
It is within this context that we decided to enter Ukraine almost immediately after the invasion, to help ensure that the country builds back in an environmentally friendly and socially inclusive manner.
We believe the circular economy can be regenerative not only for the environment, but for communities touched by tragedy.
What We've Done
Rubble processing: We started in Ukraine by applying our expertise in construction and demolition waste processing to recover and recycle materials from damaged buildings for local reconstruction, and to date we have recycled 50 million tons of concrete valued at up to €800,000 in Kyiv and expanded our rubble processing operations into Mykolaiv and Dnipropetrovsk.
Large scale damage assessment: In June 2023, we partnered with Mission East and UA Damage to produce a detailed damage assessment of 70 rural settlements in Mykolaiv using satellite and drone imagery processed by AI, providing transparent, accountable, and accurate reconstruction cost estimates that help international organizations plan their budgets and activities—contact us to request your free copy of the Mykolaiv Damage Assessment Report.
Employing and supporting veterans: We believe that Ukraine can be rebuilt in an environmentally and socially inclusive way. To this end, we have invested significant attention and resources to employ veterans in many of our programs. Although this focus of ours presents some challenges, we've also found ways to unlock and bring many of their strengths to our work, while also providing these colleagues with healthy and productive ways to keep engaging with their local communities.
